Summary

Embark on an exciting 5-day adventure to the iconic Inca city of Choquequirao, also known as the “Cradle of Gold”. Located on the banks of the Apurímac River and surrounded by imposing glaciers and snow-capped peaks, this archaeological treasure is a less crowded site that preserves the essence of Inca resistance against the Spanish conquest.

During this Choquequirao Tour with Turitika Travel, you will walk ancient Inca paths, cross cloud forests, admire spectacular landscapes, and discover architecture akin to Machu Picchu. Each day will be filled with history, nature, and the opportunity to observe the abundant Andean flora and fauna.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to do the 5-day Choquequirao Trek?

The best season for hiking Choquequirao is the dry season (April to November). During these months:

  • The skies are clearer, perfect for panoramic photography.
  • The trails remain dry and safe.
  • The nights are cold but less extreme than in the rainy season.

In the rainy season (December–March), you’ll find greener landscapes, but with slippery slopes and wet campsites. For a more comfortable and safe experience, we recommend April–October.

What level of physical conditioning is required?

The 5-day Choquequirao trek is of moderate to challenging difficulty. It involves 6-8 hours of walking per day, with long ascents and descents.

We recommend:

  • Training with long hikes or running in the months leading up to the trek.
  • Strengthening leg muscles and cardiovascular endurance.
  • Acclimatizing in Cusco for at least 2-3 days before departure.

You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be in good physical condition to fully enjoy the trek.

What’s the difference between the 4-day and 5-day Choquequirao treks?

Both itineraries lead to the majestic Choquequirao site, but there are key differences:

  • 4D/3N Trek: Designed for travelers with limited time and good physical fitness. The days are longer (7-9 hours of walking), with less time to rest and explore at a leisurely pace.
  • 5D/4N Trek: Offers a more gradual and balanced pace. You get to spend a full day exploring Choquequirao, enjoying its plazas, terraces, and viewpoints without rushing.
  • The 5-day itinerary reduces accumulated fatigue and improves the cultural and natural experience, making it ideal for those seeking a less demanding and deeper journey.

How is medical attention during the Choquequirao trek?

Each group has a bilingual guide certified in first aid and a complete first-aid kit. Additionally:

  • We carry a portable oxygen tank.
  • We have VHF radio for emergencies.
  • In severe cases, we organize a quick evacuation to the nearest health post.

Safety is a priority, and we are prepared to handle altitude sickness or any eventuality.

Are any additional permits or paperwork required?

No. Entry to Choquequirao is included in the package. You just need:

  • Valid passport or ID.
  • ISIC card if you qualify for the student discount.
  • If minors are traveling, parental authorization.

Turitika Travel takes care of all permits and tickets prior to your trip.

What type of food is included?

We include 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 4 dinners, prepared by a mountain chef. The menu includes:

  • Energy-rich Andean dishes (quinoa, potatoes, corn, trout).
  • Snacks, fresh fruit, and hot drinks.
  • Vegetarian, vegan, or special options upon request.

The meals are balanced to maintain energy during intense days.

How is the luggage transported during the route?

We have muleteers and horses that carry tents, kitchen, and provisions. The traveler only carries in their personal backpack:

  • Water and snacks.
  • Sunscreen, camera, and small items.
  • Light daily clothing.

If desired, you can rent an extra horse for up to 8 kg of personal luggage.

How are the camps on the Choquequirao Trek?

Each camp includes:

  • Double tents with comfortable mattresses.
  • Dining tent and equipped kitchen.
  • Chef and muleteers who set everything up before your arrival.

They are safe, organized spaces to ensure rest and comfort after each demanding day.

What should I bring in my personal backpack?

We recommend bringing only the essentials:

  • 2 liters of water in a canteen or camelback.
  • Energy snacks.
  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Light waterproof or rain poncho.
  • Camera or phone with a fully charged battery.
  • Basic personal hygiene items.

The rest is transported by our logistical team.

How demanding is the Day 2 hike?

Day 2 is one of the most intense days of the trek. It includes:

  • Descent to Playa Rosalina (45 min).
  • Challenging 4–5 hour ascent to Marampata.
  • Final 1-hour section to Choquequirao.

Although it is a tough day, the reward is reaching the camp next to the majestic citadel.

What animals and landscapes can I see?

During the trek, it is common to observe:

  • Endemic birds.
  • Cloud forests with orchids and bromeliads.
  • Imposing glaciers and snow-capped peaks.

The trek is a perfect combination of nature and archaeology.

Will there be cell phone signal or internet?

The Choquequirao route is a total disconnection experience. There is no stable signal for most of the journey. Only in high areas like Marampata might there be intermittent coverage. We recommend informing family members before the trek and enjoying the opportunity to disconnect.

What safety measures are taken?

Our team follows strict safety protocols:

  • Guides certified in first aid.
  • Oxygen and complete first-aid kit.
  • Emergency horses in case of need.
  • VHF radio communication.

The group’s safety is always a priority.

What happens in case of bad weather?

The trek is conducted even with moderate rain. We recommend bringing:

  • Waterproof poncho or good quality jacket.
  • Waterproof boots with good grip.

In case of storms or extreme conditions, the guide will adjust the itinerary prioritizing safety.

Can I combine Choquequirao with Machu Picchu?

Yes, there is an extended 8-9 day trek that connects Choquequirao with Machu Picchu. It is one of the most spectacular routes in the Andes. For this 5D/4N itinerary, the experience is independent, but we offer personalized tours for those wishing to experience both destinations in one adventure.
