Summary

In this unique adventure, we will explore the majestic Choquequirao, home to impressive Inca structures that, like Machu Picchu, showcase the architectural mastery of this great culture. With almost 40% of the site excavated, Choquequirao offers a less crowded alternative for those seeking a deeper connection with Inca heritage.

Additionally, we will explore the imposing Apurímac Canyon, considered the second deepest in the Americas, a natural sanctuary for the mythical Andean condor and a stage for changing landscapes shaped over thousands of years. This trek is designed for lovers of hiking and untamed nature, seeking an authentic and challenging experience in the Andes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Kapuliyoq – Chikisqa

At 6:00 a.m., the Turitika Travel team will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. We will start the private transfer to San Pedro de Cachora (2,800 m above sea level), where we will do last-minute shopping. From there, we will continue by vehicle to the starting point at Kapuliyoq. With your guide and support team (cooks, muleteers, and horses), we will begin the hike, passing through landscapes ranging from the puna to the edge of the mountain, at the foot of the Pedrayoc snow-capped peaks. After 4-6 hours of descent, we will reach Chikisqa for a hearty lunch, set up camp, and have dinner under the Andean sky.

Day 2: Chikisqa – Playa Rosalina – Santa Rosa – Sunchupata

After breakfast at 6:00 a.m., we will descend to the Apurímac Riverbed to Playa Rosalina (1,550 m above sea level). We will then tackle the ascent to the montane forest of Santa Rosa (2,100 m above sea level), where we will have lunch surrounded by lush vegetation. We will continue to Marampata (2,850 m above sea level), where dense Andean flora can be seen. Finally, we will reach the Sunchupata camp for dinner and rest.

Day 3: Sunchupata – Choquequirao – Chikisqa

The day begins with an energizing breakfast before we head into the cloud forests to the entrance of the Choquequirao archaeological complex. You will have time to explore its ceremonial terraces, plazas, and kallankas, guided by explanations that reveal the history and symbolism of the Inca culture. After 3 hours of exploration, we will return by the same trail, passing again through Sunchupata, Santa Rosa, and Playa Rosalina, until we reach Chikisqa, where we will set up camp and have dinner.

Day 4: Chikisqa – Kapuliyoq – Cusco

The last Andean sunrise will be celebrated with a hot coffee and breakfast with views of the river. We will begin the 4-hour ascent to the Kapuliyoq pass (2,915 m above sea level), observing condors and the unique flora of the region. After reaching the top, we will enjoy lunch while contemplating the Apurímac Valley and the Choquequirao ruins. In the afternoon, we will return by private transport to Cusco, arriving around 6:00 p.m. for your hotel transfer.

End of service.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to do the Choquequirao Trek?

The best time to hike Choquequirao is during the dry season (April to October). During these months, you will find clear skies, firmer trails, and great visibility, making the experience more enjoyable.

In the rainy season (November to March), the trails tend to become slippery, and the Apurímac River’s water levels may make crossing difficult, although the vegetation is greener and more lush.

We recommend planning your trip in the dry season if you’re looking for security and better panoramic views.

Do I need previous experience in high-altitude hikes?

You don’t need to be an expert mountaineer, but it is recommended to be in good physical condition and have some prior experience with multi-hour hikes.

The trek includes steep ascents and descents lasting between 4 and 7 hours per day. If you’ve never done high-altitude trekking:

  • It is advisable to acclimatize in Cusco for 2 or 3 days to prevent altitude sickness.
  • Training with walking or physical activities (cycling, running, long hikes) before the trip will help with endurance.
  • Our guide will organize strategic rest breaks to ensure the pace is manageable.

With basic preparation and a positive mindset, any healthy traveler can complete the route.

What type of footwear is best for the Choquequirao Hike?

Footwear is one of the most important factors for safety and comfort. It is recommended to bring:

  • Waterproof trekking boots to protect from rain and river crossings.
  • Soles with good non-slip grip, as there are sections with loose soil and rocks.
  • Light shoes or sandals for resting at the campsite after the hike.

Avoid new or untested shoes, as they can cause blisters and discomfort during the trek.

Can I request vegetarian or special diets?

Yes, we offer customized meal options as long as they are requested in advance. Our chef prepares special menus such as:

  • Vegetarian or vegan.
  • Gluten-free or lactose-free.
  • Low-fat or high-protein diets.

The meals are made with fresh regional ingredients, ensuring enough energy for each day’s journey. It’s important to inform us of your dietary needs at the time of booking.

How is the gear and provisions transported?

All camp equipment (tents, kitchen, food) is transported by muleteers and horses. You will only carry in your personal backpack:

  • Water and snacks.
  • Light clothing and warm layers.
  • Personal items and camera.

If desired, you can rent an extra horse for your personal luggage (up to 8 kg) for an additional fee. This way, you can enjoy the hike without carrying excess weight.

How demanding is the ascent to Choquequirao?

The trek is considered of moderate to high difficulty. The route includes:

  • Steep descents into the Apurímac Canyon (days 1 and 2).
  • Long and continuous ascents to Choquequirao (days 2 and 3).
  • Altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 3,100 m above sea level.

The key is to maintain a steady pace and rest at the indicated points. Our guides offer continuous support and motivation throughout the journey.

Do I need an entrance ticket for Choquequirao?

Yes, access to Choquequirao requires an official ticket, which is included in the Turitika Travel package. We handle the permits in advance, so you don’t need to worry about additional paperwork.

Will there be cell phone signal or internet during the Choquequirao Trek?

For most of the route, there is no cell phone coverage or internet access. This disconnection is part of the experience, as it allows you to enjoy the natural surroundings and tranquility.

In some elevated points like Marampata, there may be intermittent signals from local providers, but it is not reliable.

What animals and birds can be observed on the trek?

During the trek, you may commonly observe:

  • Andean condors soaring over the Apurímac Canyon.
  • Deer, Andean foxes, and high-altitude birds.
  • Butterflies and unique flora like orchids and bromeliads.

The area is a rich biodiversity ecosystem, considered a natural refuge in the Andes.

What should I bring in my personal backpack for the Choquequirao Trek?

It’s recommended to bring only the essentials to avoid overloading your pack:

  • 2 liters of water in a canteen or camelback.
  • Energy snacks (bars, nuts, chocolates).
  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Camera or phone with a fully charged battery.
  • Light clothing for the day and warm layers for the night.
  • Personal hygiene items.

The rest of your gear will be transported by the muleteers.

What happens if I can't continue the hike?

In case of extreme fatigue or health issues, we have support horses that can help you complete the more demanding sections. Additionally:

  • Our guides carry a first-aid kit.
  • Portable oxygen is available for altitude sickness.
  • We follow established safety protocols for your well-being.

How are the camps on the Choquequirao Trek?

The camps are organized by our team before your arrival. They include:

  • Double tents with comfortable mattresses.
  • Dining area equipped with tables and chairs.
  • Cooking area where the chef prepares meals.
  • Basic lighting and a safe environment.

We aim to provide comfort in nature after each demanding day.

Is it possible to combine Choquequirao with Machu Picchu?

Yes, there are extended routes of 7 to 9 days that connect Choquequirao with Machu Picchu, considered some of the most spectacular treks in the world.

The 4-day tour is independent, but we can design personalized itineraries for those who want to experience the full journey.

What safety measures are taken during the hike?

Safety is our priority. Throughout the trek:

  • Guides carry a first-aid kit, oxygen, and communication radios.
  • The group is always accompanied by support personnel.
  • A security briefing is given before starting the hike.
  • Emergency horses are available for special cases.

What happens in case of rain or bad weather?

The hike is conducted even in moderate rain. Therefore, we recommend bringing a rain poncho or a good jacket.
In case of extreme weather (storms or river floods), the guide will assess the situation and may modify the itinerary to ensure the safety of the group. Nature is unpredictable, so flexibility is part of the adventure.
