FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to do the Salkantay Trek?

The best time is during the dry season (April to October), when the skies are clear and the trails are firmer.
In the rainy season (November to March), the landscapes become greener and more spectacular, but there are also risks: slippery paths and potential river overflow.

If you seek comfort and safety, we recommend planning between May and September.

Do I need previous mountain experience?

You don’t need to be a mountaineer, but it’s recommended to have physical endurance and experience in long hikes.

The trek includes 7 to 9 hours of hiking per day with continuous ascents and descents. To prepare:

  • Train for 10–15 km hikes before your trip.
  • Acclimatize in Cusco for at least 2 nights before the trek.
  • Maintain a steady pace and take advantage of rest breaks.

With basic preparation and support from our guides, any motivated traveler can do it.

What should I know about crossing the Salkantay Pass?

The Salkantay Pass, at 4,600 meters above sea level, is the highest point of the trek and one of the most impressive landscapes on the route.

Important aspects to consider:

  • The ascent from Soraypampa takes about 4 hours with continuous inclines.
  • The weather is cold, with temperatures dropping to -5 °C and strong winds.
  • From the top, you will have spectacular views of the Salkantay snow-capped peak and nearby glaciers.
  • Our guides make traditional offerings to the mountain, known as Apu Salkantay, which is considered sacred by Andean communities.
  • Then we begin the descent to Huayracmachay, where the climate gradually changes to temperate.

With prior acclimatization and walking at a good pace, it’s an achievable and rewarding challenge.

How is the accommodation in the Salkantay Trek camps?

The camps are safe and comfortable. They include:

  • Double tents with insulating mattresses.
  • Dining tent with tables, chairs, and full service.
  • Cooking tent where our chef prepares meals.
  • In Lucmabamba, you can optionally visit hot springs.

The last night will be spent in a hotel in Aguas Calientes with hot showers, Wi-Fi, and a comfortable bed.

What altitude will I reach in Salkantay?

The highest point is the Salkantay Pass (4,600 meters above sea level), one of the most impressive mountain passes in the Andes.

It’s normal to feel tired or out of breath, but with acclimatization and walking slowly, you can overcome it without problem.

Our guides carry emergency oxygen and first-aid kits at all times.

How difficult is this 5-day Salkantay Trek?

The difficulty is moderate to high.

Factors that make it challenging:

  • Distances of up to 19 km per day.
  • Altitudes over 4,500 meters above sea level.
  • Changing weather, from mountain cold to jungle heat.

With basic preparation and a positive attitude, the experience is challenging but achievable.

What should I bring in my personal backpack?

It’s recommended to bring only the essentials for the day:

  • 2 liters of water in a canteen or camelback.
  • Energy snacks: bars, dried fruits, chocolates.
  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Light waterproof jacket or poncho.
  • Headlamp with spare batteries.
  • Camera or phone with a charged battery.

The rest of your gear will be carried by horses.

What does the food include during the Salkantay Trek?

Our chef prepares breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks with fresh regional ingredients.

Included are a variety of meals such as soups, stews, pasta, rice, meats, vegetables, and hot drinks (coca tea, coffee, tea).

We also offer vegetarian or special diet options if requested at booking.

Will I be able to visit Humantay Lake?

Yes, on Day 1 of the itinerary, we will visit Humantay Lake.

The ascent takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from Soraypampa. There, you will learn about:

  • Its glacial formation.
  • The spiritual significance to Andean communities.
  • Stunning views of the Humantay snow-capped peak.

How cold can it get during the 5-day Salkantay Trek?

At high-altitude camps like Soraypampa, temperatures can drop to -5 °C at night.

We recommend bringing:

  • Thermal clothing.
  • Wool gloves and hat.
  • Sleeping bag for -10 °C (available for rent).

In the high jungle, the weather is warmer and more humid.

Is entry to Machu Picchu included?

Yes, our package includes the entry ticket to the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary with a 2-hour guided tour.
Optionally, you can add the entry to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for an additional USD 25 (subject to availability).

What safety measures are applied?

Safety is our priority. For each trek, we have:

  • Certified guides in first aid and rescue.
  • First-aid kit and portable oxygen.
  • Support horses for emergency cases.
  • Constant communication between guides and central office.

What animals and landscapes will I see along the Salkantay trail?

The trek combines unique ecosystems:

  • Snow-capped peaks: Salkantay, Humantay.
  • Andean wildlife: endemic birds, vizcachas, foxes.
  • High jungle: orchids, hummingbirds, and butterflies.
  • Archaeological sites: Llactapata with views of Machu Picchu.

What happens in case of bad weather?

In case of moderate rain, the trek will continue as planned, always wearing a poncho or waterproof jacket.

In case of extreme weather (heavy storms or floods), the guide will adjust the itinerary to prioritize the safety of the group.

Our team is trained to handle these situations and ensure a safe experience.

How is the last day in Machu Picchu?

The last day is dedicated to the visit to Machu Picchu.

It includes:

  • Bus transfer from Aguas Calientes to the citadel.
  • 2-hour guided tour of the main Inca sites.
  • Free time for photos and personal exploration.
  • Return by panoramic train to Ollantaytambo and bus to Cusco.

It’s the perfect conclusion after a journey through glaciers, jungle, and Andean villages.
