From there, we will take the train to km. 104 (approximately 1 hour). At km. 104, our guide will be waiting to start the tour of the Chachabamba archaeological complex, located at 2250 meters above sea level. From there, we will walk through beautiful landscapes until we reach Wiñay Huayna, a place full of local flora such as orchids, and enjoy spectacular views of the Urubamba River. During the hike, we will take a break for a box lunch. Then, we will continue to reach Inti Punku (Sun Gate), where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset over Machu Picchu. Afterwards, we will descend to the town of Aguas Calientes, where you will spend the night.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do the Inca Trail days without a Travel Agency?

No, the Short Inca Trail is a Protected Natural and Cultural Area, and only agencies authorized by the Ministry of Culture and SERNANP can operate this route. This ensures the safety of visitors, respect for heritage, and proper environmental conservation. With Turitika Travel, you will have certified service, professional guides, and all the logistics necessary for your experience.

What is the best season to do the Short Inca Trail?

The best time is during the dry season, from April to October, when the days are sunnier, and there is less chance of rain, allowing for better views. During the rainy season (November to March), the Short Inca Trail can still be done, although the trails may be wet and slippery. Any time of year, the experience is unique.

How difficult is the Short Inca Trail?

The Short Inca Trail is considered moderately difficult. The walk is about 11 km on the first day, with some ascents, but without reaching the extreme altitudes of the classic Inca Trail. It is ideal for those in good physical condition who want to experience the Inca Trail in less time.

What should I bring during the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

It is recommended to bring:

  • Light clothing for the day and warm clothing for the evening/night.
  • Comfortable and durable trekking shoes.
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Enough water (at least 1.5 L) and energy snacks.
  • Camera or cell phone to capture landscapes and unique moments.
  • Rain poncho or waterproof jacket, especially between November and March.

Can I add an extra experience during the Short Inca Trail?

Yes, you can include the ascent to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. Both require additional entrance fees and must be reserved in advance, as spots are limited. These hikes offer spectacular panoramic views of the citadel and the natural surroundings.

What archaeological sites will I visit in the 2-day Inca Trail?

During the tour, you will visit important archaeological sites such as:

  • Chachabamba: starting point of the trek.
  • Wiñayhuayna: a complex with terraces, fountains, and temples, surrounded by orchids.
  • Intipunku or Sun Gate: entrance point with the first panoramic view of Machu Picchu.
  • Finally, the Machu Picchu citadel.

Where will I stay during the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

The first night is spent in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, in a double room with a private bathroom and hot water. This allows for relaxation after the hike and prepares you for the visit to Machu Picchu the next day. It is also possible to upgrade to higher-category hotels for an additional cost.

Does the Short Inca Trail include meals?

Yes, it includes:

  • Day 1: Box lunch during the trek and dinner in Aguas Calientes.
  • Day 2: Breakfast at the hotel before the visit to Machu Picchu.

The lunch on the second day in Aguas Calientes is free, allowing you to choose between local restaurants or a tourist buffet (optional with an additional cost). We also accommodate special dietary requests (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) with prior notice.

What does the entrance to Machu Picchu in the 2-day Inca Trail include?

The Short Inca Trail includes the general entry ticket to Machu Picchu and a guided tour of the main sections such as the Main Plaza, the Temple of the Sun, the Solar Clock, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the quarries. If you want to enter additional mountains (Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain), you must book in advance and pay an extra fee.

Is it necessary to book the Short Inca Trail in advance?

Yes, it is recommended to book several months in advance, especially between May and August, when demand is high. The permits for the Short Inca Trail and Machu Picchu entry tickets are limited and tend to sell out quickly. Booking early ensures your spot and avoids any setbacks.

What if it rains during the Short Inca Trail?

The Short Inca Trail is done even in the rain, as the weather in the Andes is variable. For greater comfort, it is recommended to bring a rain poncho or windbreaker. Our guides adjust the pace and look for the best moments to rest and take photos, even in misty or light rain conditions.

Is the 5-day Inca Trail safe?

Yes, the Short Inca Trail is safe and suitable for visitors of all ages who are in good physical condition. Our guides are trained in first aid, and we carry oxygen and a first-aid kit at all times. Additionally, since it is only a 2-day hike, the physical demand is lower than the classic Inca Trail.

What type of train is used in the Short Inca Trail?

A comfortable and safe tourist train is used from Ollantaytambo to km 104 (outbound) and from Aguas Calientes back to Ollantaytambo (return). Depending on availability, you can choose between Expedition or Vistadome trains, and there is also the option to upgrade to a panoramic train for an additional cost.

Can I visit the hot springs in Aguas Calientes after the 2-day Inca Trail?

Yes, upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will have the option to visit the Hot Springs, which are a few minutes from the town center. The entrance is not included (approx. PEN 10.00), but it is a great way to relax your muscles after the hike.

What does the guide service include in the Short Inca Trail?

The guide will accompany you from the start of the trek at km 104 to the guided tour at Machu Picchu, ensuring an enriching and well-organized trip.

They make traveling so easy and comfortable: airport pick-ups and drop-offs, a private driver with a spacious and comfortable van (including bottled water), a very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide for each excursion, excellent restaurant options, and wonderful hotel accommodations. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. I definitely recommend them and would without a doubt book through them again.
