FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best season for the Inca Trail?

The best time to do the Inca Trail is during the dry season, from April to October. During these months, the weather is more stable, with sunny days and less rain, making the hike easier and offering better panoramic views. During the rainy season (November to March), the route is also available, although it can be more challenging due to the humidity and slippery terrain. Remember that in February, the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance.

Do I need prior trekking experience?

No, but it is recommended to be in good physical condition and have stamina. The Inca Trail includes long ascents, steep descents, and 6 to 8 hours of walking per day. People who practice sports, hiking, or long walks in their daily life usually adapt better. Before the trip, we suggest doing preparatory walks and cardio exercises to fully enjoy the trek.

Can I rent equipment such as trekking poles or sleeping bags?

Yes, we offer the option to rent sleeping bags for USD 20 and trekking poles for USD 10. All our rental equipment is in good condition and ready to use. This allows you to travel lighter and without the need to bring these accessories from your home country.

Is it safe to do this hike?

The Inca Trail is a safe and well-organized route. Our guides are accredited and trained in first aid, we carry oxygen and a first aid kit, and the porters ensure proper handling of the equipment. Additionally, because we work with small groups, the attention is personalized. Thousands of travelers take this route every year with total confidence.

How many people are in each group?

We work with small groups of 8 to 12 people, ensuring a more intimate environment, greater flexibility, and personalized attention from the guide. This also facilitates logistics and allows you to enjoy the landscapes and explanations better.

What is the difficulty level of the 4-day Inca Trail?

The difficulty is moderate to challenging. The most demanding section is the second day, when crossing the Warmiwañusca Pass (4,200 m/13,780 ft), the highest point of the trek. However, the itinerary is designed with strategic breaks and a comfortable pace, so anyone with medium physical condition can complete it successfully.

What type of meals are included during the Classic Inca Trail?

During the 4 days, we include breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks prepared by a camp chef. The menus are varied, nutritious, and balanced, with vegetarian and vegan options upon request. Coca tea is served every morning, and every day water is boiled to refill your canteens.

What should I bring in my personal backpack?

In your day backpack (20-30 L), you should bring:

  • Water bottle or camelback.
  • Sunscreen, hat or cap, and sunglasses.
  • Raincoat or poncho for rain.
  • Personal snacks.
  • Camera and extra batteries.
  • Light clothing for the day and warm clothing for the night.
  • Headlamp.

The rest of the equipment will be carried by porters.

What archaeological sites are visited on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

During the 4 days, several Inca archaeological sites are explored, including:

  • Llactapata
  • Runkurakay
  • Sayacmarca
  • Phuyupatamarca
  • Wiñayhuayna
  • Intipunku (Sun Gate)
  • The Machu Picchu Citadel

Each site is explained in detail by the guide, making the trek not only a scenic experience but also a cultural one.

What if I suffer from altitude sickness on the Classic Inca Trail?

Altitude sickness can occur, especially on the second day. Our guides carry portable oxygen, first aid kit, and coca tea to alleviate symptoms. It is recommended to acclimate in Cusco for at least 2 days before the trek and stay well hydrated. In extreme cases, the guide will organize an immediate descent to ensure the traveler’s safety.

Can I climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain after the 4-day Inca Trail?

Yes, you can add access to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for an additional fee of USD 25. Both have limited availability, so it is important to reserve in advance. Climbing Huayna Picchu takes about 2 hours, while Machu Picchu Mountain requires 3 hours, but offers spectacular views.

What kind of accommodation will I have during the trek?

For 3 nights, you will stay in organized campsites, with weather-resistant tents, mats, and a dining area. Porters handle the setup and breakdown, so you can focus on enjoying the hike. The last night is spent in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes before returning to Cusco.

Do I need travel insurance for the Inca Trail?

It is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. International travel insurance provides coverage for any accidents, illnesses, or unforeseen events during the hike. It’s additional peace of mind for you and your family.

What’s the weather like on the Inca Trail?

The weather varies depending on the altitude. During the day, temperatures can reach 20-25°C, while at night they can drop to 5°C or lower at the higher campsites. It’s important to bring layered clothing to adjust to the temperature changes, as well as a raincoat for occasional showers.

How do I book the Classic Inca Trail?

To secure your spot, a deposit in advance is required, as Inca Trail permits sell out quickly. It’s ideal to book 4 to 6 months in advance, especially during the high season (May-August). Once your booking is confirmed, we will send you detailed preparation and logistics information.

They make traveling so easy and comfortable: airport pick-ups and drop-offs, a private driver with a spacious and comfortable van (including bottled water), a very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide for each excursion, excellent restaurant options, and wonderful hotel accommodations. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. I definitely recommend them and would without a doubt book through them again.
